Periods? Wet dreams? Pimples? Voice cracking? Can’t zip up your jeans? Puberty can be a weird time for both guys and girls. So what is it?

Usually between the ages of 8 and 18 years old, your body starts changing and growing as it responds to increased hormones and moves into adulthood.

Puberty means major changes in your body, both physically and emotionally. In girls, the main hormone guiding the body's new changes is called oestrogen. In guys, it's testosterone.

There is no exact age when everyone goes though puberty – it differs from person to person. Girls tend to hit puberty between the ages of 8 and 17. Guys can expect it to land between the ages of 10 and 18. But one thing everyone has in common is that we all go through it!

How will I know its started?

Puberty feels different for everyone and is a pretty gradual process. The first changes usually aren't seen with your eyes as they involve your hormones. As your body begins to produce greater amounts hormones (testosterone, in particular), you will begin to see signs of puberty. Click here to check out some of the signs that puberty is starting.
